Renowned American composer and conductor, Carl Davis, known for his
exceptional work on various British TV shows and films, has passed away
at the age of 86.
His family released a statement confirming his demise in Oxford due to a brain hemorrhage. They expressed pride in his remarkable musical legacy, highlighting his significant contribution to reinventing silent movies for a new generation and his creation of memorable scores for beloved British TV dramas.
Born in Brooklyn in 1936, Davis began his career in New York and gained recognition for co-authoring the 1959 revue "Diversions," which earned an off-Broadway Emmy. He later moved to Britain after participating in the 1961 Edinburgh Festival.
In London, he immersed himself in the country's theater, television, and movie scene, composing for prestigious institutions like the National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company. His work in British television includes the BBC's acclaimed "Pride and Prejudice" in 1995.
However, Davis's most prominent achievement in television was his score for the influential documentary series "The World at War," narrated by Laurence Olivier and aired on ITV over 26 weeks. His haunting theme music perfectly set the tone for the sobering and factual portrayal of World War II.
In the realm of film, Davis found great success with the score for the 1981 movie "The French Lieutenant's Woman," starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons, which earned him a BAFTA award. He also received recognition for his work in movies like "Champions" in 1984, starring John Hurt, and "Scandal" in 1989, featuring Ian McKellen and Joanne Whalley.
Aside from his television and film accomplishments, Davis reconstructed and composed scores for more than 50 silent films, showcasing his talent with legendary stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd.
In addition to his work in TV and film, Davis was a notable composer of symphonic concert pieces and ballet scores, which have been performed around the world.
Faber Music's CEO, Richard King, expressed deep respect for Davis's work, as he had been a central figure in their roster for over half of the company's existence since his arrival in 1990.
In 2005, Carl Davis was honored with the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the late Queen Elizabeth II. He is survived by his wife Jean Boht, their two daughters, and three grandchildren.
