The new 'Alien' movie already has a release date
Disney set a release date for the next Alien movie. The franchise will return to the big screen after seven years.
Since the previous year we knew that a new Alien movie , one of the most popular science fiction franchises, was underway under the direction of the Uruguayan Fede Álvarez. Now, finally, Disney has confirmed its release date: August 16, 2024 .
The next installment of Alien cannot be taken lightly. Despite the fact that the saga returns to the big screen after several years of absence, this will be the first under the Disney umbrella . We must remember that, during 2019, those led by Bob Iger closed the purchase of 21st Century Fox for 71.3 billion dollars.
Until that point, Fox had ownership of Alien . After the acquisition agreement was finalized, the franchise became managed by Disney. This last company, knowing that it has quite profitable intellectual property, wasted no time and quickly began to think about the future of it.
First of all, they greenlit the first series of Alien . At the end of 2020, Disney took advantage of its Investor Day to announce this production . It is headed by Noah Hawley, who also serves as a screenwriter. Of course, the plan is not to release it on Disney +, but through Hulu and FX. There has also been talk about the possibility of offering it on Star+ in certain countries.
However, it was not until December of the previous year that another big news was revealed: Disney also approved a new Alien movie . It will star Cailee Spaeny , an actress who has participated in productions such as How It Ends , On the Basis of Sex , Vice and Pacific Rim: Uprising .
The rest of the cast is made up of David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. Yes, they are somewhat unknown actors to most, so they have a unique opportunity to boost their career.
Production, for its part, is in the hands of Scott Free , the film company founded by Ridley Scott (creator of Alien ). At some point it was speculated that the acclaimed filmmaker would be involved in the project as an executive producer, but at the moment there is no confirmation.
On the other hand, and as previously mentioned, Fede Álvarez occupies the director's chair of the new Alien . In his history of directed feature films we find, for example, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2021), Chaos: The Beginning , The Girl in the Spider's Web and Hell's Gauntlet .
The synopsis for the next Alien film tells us: "In this ninth installment of the popular film series, a group of young people from a faraway world face off against the most terrifying life form in the universe." Those responsible have made it clear that it is a film whose narrative is independent of any previous tape, so it will not be connected to the events of Alien: Covenant .
Considering the revealed release date, everything indicates that filming is ready to start. It should come as no surprise that more details start to leak out in the coming months. We do hope, however, that the writers' strike, and possibly the actors' strike, will not stand in their way.
